09/23/13 - 09/27/09 Bellringers

09/23/13

I got to go to Church on Sunday, that's always fun.

My weekend was the same as most of my other weekends.

Is that a bad thing?

One minute is an incredibly long time.
I think you should actually just give us a minute to write an answer.

Question 2: Where did I see good design over the weekend?

South Chapel has really nice design, if you must know.

Yeah.
The design is really nice.
So.
So it's good design.

09/24/13

Okay.

So today I read http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2013/09/24/2003572883/1.

Basically it reports about a writer for a newspaper whose paper wasn't published on the seventeenth. The article he wrote was about Wang Jin-pyng (I believe), who he says is being scapegoated for the Ma administration's incompetence. Wang Jin-pyng was formally KMT until recently when Ma Ying-jeou, being Chairman, removed that status. Not having a political party removed his ability to be a lawmaker so Wang is now no longer a lawmaker. The trial involved accusations that Wang had accepted I think it was a $200,000 USD bribe from DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) to act in their favor (this being based on Wang' opposition to the FTA).

The article says Ma has brought a period of soft-"White Terror."

9/25/13

I read about two things.

The first was a free dog-sitting app. Anybody can register to become a dog-sitter; the app facilitates this so that people can go on their app to find local dog-sitters. The average rate for a dog-sitter is 40% less than that of a typical dog kennel.

also

I read about a possibly new mud island caused by earthquakes or landslides in Pakistan.

Locals say that it is actually not new, that it surfaced before and then sank again in a year.

09/27/13

  • In 2011, 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 3,267 in 2010. An additional, 387,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 416,000 injured in 2010.
  • 10% of injury crashes in 2011 were reported as distraction-affected crashes.
  • As of December 2012, 171.3 billion text messages were sent in the US (includes PR, the Territories, and Guam) every month.(CTIA)
  • 11% of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted.
  • For drivers 15-19 years old involved in fatal crashes, 21 percent of the distracted drivers were distracted by the use of cell phones (NHTSA)
  • At any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010. (NOPUS)

The sources get even less reliable so I omitted those.

Maaaaaan.
Look at all those government references.

Let me tell you something about life.

If it comes from Obama, it's crap.

Website Critique Definitions

taipeitimes.com

Visual Hierarchy:

Unity/Consistency: A unified or consistent website is a website that follows all the design rules it sets for itself the entire time.

Grid/Layout: This basically determines how much of what you do is contributed to x and how much to y.

Navigation: I suppose this would be the order of events one has to take to get somewhere on a webpage. Navigation should typically direct most easily to the most-trafficked page.

Typography: This is basically which font you choose to apply to your text and I think that anybody with a brain (including you) should know why that is important.
Audience: This is your viewer base. Your website should appeal to this or your desired viewer base.

Color: Typically this is the color palette you use on your website.

Content: Details and everything inside.

Graphics: Pictures, visual detail, et cetera, blah blah

Overall Effectiveness: This is just a bunch of words trying to describe if or if not the visual schemes one is using on his website are going well together.

WARM COLORS VS COOL COLORS

Red ->

Oh yeah before I begin my only source is http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/01/28/color-theory-for-designers-part-1-the-meaning-of-color/ because this is basically all that's about.

SO

Red -> Indicates prosperity in China, Communism; references danger, can be construed to portray blood, also associated with fire, action and warfare.

Orange -> Described as a calmer derivative of red (or anyways concerning its emotion-evoking properties) which is (obviously) more closely associated with fire but, when muted, is representative of -- oh let's see -- "...health and vitality...earth and with autumn." Fascinating!1111

Yellow -> According to this webpage it's associated with hope, happiness, cowardice and courage (yeah), mourning and mercantilism.
Obviously these are in different cultures.

By the way Yellow is the only good color and all the others are there to make sure there's not too much of a good thing.

Oh I didn't get that from the website though.

Blue -> OH MY GOSH NO I'M NOT EVEN DONE

FALSE ALARM

OKAY

BLUE -> IS A COLOR
THAT
THAT

I'm all better now.
Blue is a light-mixing primary color (a list of these being red, yellow, and blue) and also a pigmentary primary color on the RGB mixing format (Red, Green, Blue) for computers or.. something..

...

Something like that.

There are probably three thousand (out of 7.108 billion) people who really know for sure.

"...often associated with sadness in the English language [and we don't know why we're putting this here because words aren't colors]...also used extensively to represent calmness and responsibility. Light blues can be refreshing and friendly. Dark blues are more strong and reliable. [And there's a lot more you won't care about.]"

Well, isn't that nice?

Green -> Seriously? The article doesn't say ANYTHING about Islam.

Okay I'll do it for them.

Dark greens represent Islamism. And it represents grass.

Purple -> They're right, purple really was long associated with royalty. I believe the Roman word for purple actually references royalty -- something to do with the purple color of a baby prince's wrapping or.. anyways, so was green and they didn't mention it in green. I think they left pretty much everything out of there.

Well! Pretty sure that's all!
